GUARDED PLATE APPARATUS

To determine the thermal conductivity of liquids by guarded hot plate. The apparatus consists of a main heater and a radial guard heater sandwiched between copper plates. The specimen in the form of slabs of equal thickness are placed on either sides of heaters and cooling plates through which water is circulated are on the other sides of the specimen. The radial guard heater ensures all heat of the main heater to pass axially through the specimens which is collected by cooling plates

LAGGED PIPE APPARATUS

The apparatus is designed to determine total thermal resistance and thermal conductivity of lagged pipe. Lagging of pipes is required to prevent leakages of heat. In Lagged pipe Apparatus, three concentric pipes are arranged between two supports. The gap between the pipes are filled compactly by two different insulating materials and heater is provided at the centre of inner pipe. Temperature at various points is measured with Temperature Indicator.

NATURAL CONVECTION-VERTICAL CYLINDER APPARATUS

It is designed to study the temperature distribution along the length of a vertical pipe in natural convection. The unit consists of a vertical brass pipe heated by a cartridge heater inside it. It is fitted in an enclosure to provide undisturbed natural convection currents. Thermocouples are attached on the pipe to measure local temperatures. Heater input is measured on voltmeter and ammeter.

FORCED CONVECTION INSIDE TUBE APPARATUS

Average surface heat transfer coefficient for a pipe losing heat by forced convection to air flowing through it can be obtained for different air flow and heat flow rates. The unit consists of a circular pipe, loosing heat by forced convection to air, being forced through it. Constant heat flux is added to pipe by an electrical heater, provided with input control. The pipe surface temperature is measured at various points along length of pipe using thermocouples. Temperature of air at inlet and outlet of test section is measured using temperature indicator.

PIN - FIN APPARATUS

The apparatus is designed to calculate the heat transfer rate from the fin and the fin effectiveness in natural & forced convection. The apparatus consist of a pin type fin heated by a band heater at one end. It consists of a channel in which the pin fin is tested in both natural as well as forced convection. A centrifugal blower draws air over the fin. The blower is operated to touch the pin fin in forced convection only Thermocouples are attached along the length of fin to note down the longitudinal temperature gradient.

STEFAN - BOLTZMANN APPARATUS

The apparatus is used to determine the Radiation Stefan Boltzmann constant. The apparatus consists of a hemisphere surrounded by hot water. Hot water is obtained from a hot water tank with instant heater. When the blackened disc is inserted at the center of hemisphere, heat is transferred into the disc from hemisphere by radiation and its temperature begins to rise, and from temperature raise rate, Stefan Boltzmann constant is determined.

Parallel Counter Flow Apparatus

The unit consists of a tube in tube type concentric tube type exchanger hot fluid flow through inner tube and cooling water flows through the annulus. Film Wise And Drop Wise Condensation

The setup consists of an electrically heated Steam Generator (boiler) of about 1oItrs capacity. Steam is allowed into the drop wise & film wise condensation chambers. The Drop wise condensation chamber consists of a Gold plated copper tube housed in a Glass enclosure. Film wise condensation chamber consists of an identical copper tube. Cooling water is circulated inside the tubes for Condensation, with the help of a Monoblock pump. Heat input and temperatures are measured by Digital Indicators.

The Critical Heat Flux Apparatus

The apparatus consists of a cylindrical glass container containing distilled water. The heating surface is in the form a nichrome heater wire completely submerged in the water. There is another heater submerged in the water to initially heat the water up to the required temperature to study the Critical heat flux phenomenon at various bulk temperatures. The temperature of the water in the container & the temperature of the test heater are measured with the help of thermocouples. Electrical supply to the test heating is given through a variac & power input is measured with the help of a Voltmeter & an Ammeter. Heat flux can be calculated with the power input & diameter of the test heater. The burn out point will differ from theoretical prediction due to practical limitation. However, the burn out point can be visualized & the graph Heat Flux Vs Temperature difference can be drawn up to experimental burn out point.

Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

The apparatus consists of fabricated shell, inside which tubes with baffles on outer side are fitted. The present set up is a -2 heat exchangers, with cold water flows through shell. Valves are provided to control the flow rates of hot and cold water. Flow rates of hot and cold water are measured using Rotameters. Natural Convection Set Up

The setup consists brass tube rectangular duct in a vertical position. The duct is open at the top and bottom, and forms an enclosure that serves the purpose of undisturbed surronding. The apparatus is designed to determine the Stefan Boltzmann constant. The apparatus consists of a hemisphere fixed to a Bakelite plate, the outer surface of which forms the jacket to heat it Hot water to heat the hemisphere is obtained form a hot water tank, which is fixed above the hemisphere. The copper test disc is introduced at the center of hemisphere. The temperatures of hemisphere and test disc are measured with the help of temperature sensors. Pin Fin Apparatus

The unit consists of a brass or aluminium fin of a circular cross section fitted across at one end of a long rectangular dust . The other end of the duct is connected to suction side of the blower and the air flows past the fin perpendicular to its axis. One end of the fin projects outside the duct & is heated by an electric heater . Temperature at five points along the length of the fin is measured by thermocouples . The blow is not run in natural convection condition while it is run in forced convection conditions.The air flow rate can be varied by control valve on delivery side of the blower.

The unit consists of a three slabs of different materials namely mild steel, wood & backlite . Nicrome heater is provided to supply heat input across these composite walls. Total heater assembly comprises of a heater bound between two aluminum plates, on both sides of this heter identical structures of composite wall are placed. Single Effect Evaporator

Evaporation deals with the concentration of a non-volatile solute from a solution by the removal of required amount of volatile solvent. Usually the solvent is water. By vaporizing a part of the solvent , useful product I.E. The concentrated solution or thick is produced and the vapour is discarded.Long tube evaporators are usally used for the concentration of foamy liquids. The set-up consists of stainless steel tubes surronded by a stainless steel jacket and fitted with accumulator . Dilute solution is feed to tubes. Steam from a steam generator is supplied to shell to concentrate the dilute feed solution to a desired level.The jacket is fitted with a steam trap and the condensate is collected at the end of trap. The vapours of volatile solvent are condensed in a shell & tube type condenser and the balance non-volatile solute collected in the accumulator is recycled through the evaporator.

Helical Coil

Helical coils are used for heating or cooling in process tanks . When a fluid flows through a curved tube, centrifugal force acting upon the various elements of fluid moving with different velocities causes secondary circulation. Secondary flow results in higher heat transfer characteristics. Futher, secondary flow stabilizes the laminar flow leading to a higher critical Reynolds number for transition from laminar to turbulent flow.
